Essential Duties
  • Develop and maintain relationship with first year students with a focus on university acclimation, transition, and academic success.
  • Serve as a resource for students who are new to the W.
  • Assist and support first year students academically, which may include tutoring and regular course check in.
  • Attend/conduct regular office hours – Both face to face and virtual office hours using video conference software.
  • Attend corresponding course(s) for which support is offered.
  • Engage in campus outreach essential for student success.
  • Serve desk time each week at the Student Success Center front desk.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Display a desire to help students succeed.
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ.Completion of two semesters of coursework (sophomore status preferred). Be in good academic and student conduct standing.
  • Commit to being a Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ student throughout the upcoming academic year (fall and spring semesters).
  • Demonstrate a strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to individual learning styles and needs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate suggested study strategies, goal setting essential, and organizational skills.
  • Completed EN 100, MA 100 (if required for admission), EN 101, and MA 113 or MA 123, and other courses as required with 80 or above.
  • Engage in activities which demonstrate leadership potential.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and self-motivation.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn about different cultures.
  • Maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.5.
Job Description Summary
Peer mentors will play an active role in the success of students new to Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ. By providing resources and support, both academic and social, mentors will cultivate a culture of success and achievement for students new to the Mississippi University for Women.
